Isamu Noguchi, born in 1904, was an important sculptor and designer, who fused Eastern and Western influences in his works of stone and steel.
In 1927 and 1928, Noguchi received Guggenheim Fellowships, which allowed him to travel to Paris, where he worked as studio assistant to Constantin Brancusi, learning about stone sculpture and meeting other important European artists. Profoundly influenced by Brancusi, Noguchi began to create sculpture in stone, wood, and sheet metal upon his return to New York. A year later he departed again to travel through China and Japan, where he studied traditional Asian art, which also deeply impacted his aesthetic. In 1947, Noguchi produced some of the most recognizable designs of the burgeoning American Modernism movement such as the Noguchi coffee table.
Noguchi achieved great fame critical success during the last two decades of his life, among other accolades, the Whitney Museum and Walker Art Center held retrospectives of his work in 1968 and 1978, respectively, and Noguchi represented the United States in the Venice Biennale in 1986. Noguchi received the Edward MacDowell Medal for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to the Arts in 1982, the National Medal of Arts in 1987, and the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Japanese government in 1988.

Place Furniture provides a 12 month warranty on all products (unless otherwise stated in product detail page). Warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, commercial use, damage arising from abnormal use, not properly maintained and being modified goods. Place Furniture has the ultimate discretion to obtain proof of purchase and any further information to decide on warranty outcomes. Products will be repaired or replaced, depending on product circumstances and it is solely at Place Furniture’s discretion.
